The Manila Jaycees recently held its annual charity event called L.I.F.E. (Leukemic Indigents Fund Endowment) at the Araneta Coliseum. This year's theme was "A Game for Life". The Baby Jaycees brought the kids to the Big Dome to watch the game between Talk 'N Text and Coca Cola. It was very touching to see the kids enjoy their time despite their serious disease.

Two weeks from now, I will be submitting my business plan for my master's degree at AIM and I am trying my best to recall all the lessons I have learned from my more than 18-month experience in school. I am bound to have sleepless nights for the next two weeks doing my paper and I am sure the rest of my classmates are experiencing the same stress and pressure I am experiencing now. I am two months away from receiving my diploma and I am not sure if I'll be ecstatic about it considering the agony I will go through before finally graduating. As our professor puts it, we are still in boot camp and we all know that boot camp isn't fun at all!!!

Lazy photographer in Palawan

It was a cloudy weekend when my friends and I went to Palawan for a well-deserved vacation. We went to Honda Bay which is probably one of the best spots I've been to in the Philippines. We went snorkeling at Pambato reef! The water wasn't as clear as we have expected but we had a great time anyway! After that, our boat brought us to Starfish island. True to its name, there were starfishes all over the place!!! All throughout this trip, I didn't bring my camera with me because I thought it was too heavy to carry around and missed the opportunity to take great pictures of the place. I won't be going to Palawan any time soon and I am feeling the guilt until now for now bringing my camera along. Lesson learned? Don't be a lazy ass when you've waited for a long time for a trip to a magnificent place like Palawan!

It was a Saturday night. Mark, JM, Philip and I went out on our usual Saturday night gimmick. The weather was not as good as we expected it to be but we went out anyway. We had a hefty dinner at Portico in Serendra then went to Greenbelt to get some drinks. Our usual hangout place, Cena, wasn't as crowded as it was last week. The music they were playing on the background was a combination of hits from The Company and Sitti's Bossa. Mark couldn't be happier!!
A pack of cigarettes and three bottles later, we decided to call our friend Pat who's back in town with his British friends. We wanted to meet up with them but decided to just go to McDonald's instead to get some snacks. Tired and a bit tipsy, I lined up on the counter. I was feeling uneasy and a bit short of breath. Just as the cashier handed me my order, I blacked out and fell on the floor!!! Everyone around me panicked!!! My friends got out of their seats and went to my rescue. This was the first time this ever happened to me! I wanted to go home after that but JM told me to stay over his place to make sure I won't pass out again on my way...and so I did.
The next day, I met up with dad at home and told him what had happened. They were so worried. He brought me to the hospital to have me checked. I hate needles and all those tests that doctors do to you when you're at the ER. The long wait for the test results wasn't all that pleasant too! We had to wait for at least 2 hours just for us to hear that I am ok. Well, at least I'm ok...
No more drinking and smoking... for now...

Yes, I'm still alive... hahaha. I have been working my a** off these past few months and I have forgotten that this blog even exists. What have I been doing since my last post? Refer to the list below:
a. I went back to the gym. I lost around 8lbs. since February and I want to keep myself that way.
b. This summer was totally one of the best ones I have had. We went to La Union to go surfing. I learned to ride the waves and I have been wanting to surf some more. My friends and I also went to Puerto Galera for a few days. I've seen better beaches than Galera but the friends I was with made the trip really worthwhile. And summer wouldn't be complete without a trip to Boracay! It was fun alright but cmon, I was with mom... :P And it was a good time to show off my new and improved body.. haha

The Road to a Hefty Bank Account

It's a Friday night and unlike most guys my age, I am home, reading... I could have gone out with my friends but I chose to stay home and give myself a break from the inevitable Friday night traffic. My dad just got home and it has always been his routine to check on me before he goes straight to his bedroom. He doesn't knock on my bedroom door and check on me for nothing. He usually asks about how my day in the office went and asks for updates about the family business. Instead of asking me things, he threw me a book instead.(yes, literally threw me an unwrapped and unread book). The book-NEGOSYO, 50 Inspiring Entreprenuerial Stories. It is not unusual for him to do this. He would always bring us reading materials like magazines, newspaper clippings and books (even late at night) which he thinks would help us do our work in HIS business more effectively.
I just felt that it was uncanny that he particularly did this tonight. I have been contemplating on how I have put my life on hold for three years now to help out in the family business. I've always felt that way since I gave up my seemingly uninteresting but good paying job for our family business. I've always felt that this wasn't the job for me. This wasn't something I dreamt of doing while I was growing up even though I have been exposed to this business for as long as I can remember.
The book, Negosyo, is a collection of inspiring stories from different Filipino entrepreneurs like Jollibee's Tony Tan Caktiong, National Bookstore's Socorro Ramos and a lot more. I read a few stories from the book and they all kept me thinking. There is no question in my mind that I really want to be rich or even richer that the people in this book. I want to establish my own empire and be a business tycoon myself. The only question is how???
I was in graduate school a year ago at AIM. I was enrolled in their entrepreneurship program and for my first year, I was pretty much lost because I thought that I wasn't as into the business as I would like myself to be. I wasn't as passionate as I want to be.
The book gave me something to think about. One of the entrepreneurs became proactive. He didn't let his dislike for their business stop him from succeeding in life. I am no different from him, I thought. He grew to love what he was doing and even became passionate about it. Maybe it was just that I have things in my heart and mind that are stopping me from fully reaching my potential in the business. I am turning 26 a few months from now. I want to be someone by the time I reach 30(or even sooner than that). I want to have a hefty bank account under my name!!! I know it wont be an easy road but I am really up for the challenge. I am ready! I am looking forward to the next work week! I am looking forward to new challenges.... new hurdles.... BRING IT ON!

Absolut Sunset!

I've been sick for the past two days and I have stayed home to recover. I have watched all DVDs at home to keep me entertained but I was still bored. Because of my extreme boredom, I took out one bottle of absolut vodka out of the rack. No, I didn't get myself drunk! I instead tried to keep my creative juices flowing by taking a picture of this very elegant bottle!

Mona Lisa Smile

I was rushing to finish my photo project for a class I attended to years ago. I saw this old lady outside San Agustin church in Intramuros. She was so used to posing for the camera maybe because she has been photographed by students like me too in the past. I ended up buying a few rosaries from her.
I promised to give her a copy of her picture but when I went back to Intramuros, she wasn't there anymore. Her daughter received the photograph for her.I don't know where she is now but I hope she's fine.

I've been wanting to get myself a lomo but until now that has remained a dream. I'm settling with photoshop for now to achieve the lomo effect. I've yet to perfect this technique. Here's my take on this effect.

This is my typical day. These pictures aren't necessarily in order of the things I do first. I usually wake up at 8am (right!) , take a shower, dress up (or down), go out and play with Zoie, the dog. I go to the office and check the tons of papers my boss left on my desk for me to do. I do my usual rounds and check if there are problems . I usually leave the office early to go to the different construction projects we are currently doing. After that, my muddy shoes walk some more and head straight to the mall. I love checking out new books and I occassionaly buy some to put on my dusty shelves. (yes , I read them too!) At the end of the day, all I have are a pair of dirty shoes and my tired, aching feet!

These sticks have always been part of the lives of Filipinos. It's one of the most versatile species of trees in our country. Most homes in the sub-urbs have been built with bamboo trees. Some furniture can be made of these too. And bamboo shoots can be used for cooking. They're delicious.. :) Well, in my case, I made them the subject of this photograph.

I love this photograph because it represents our dreams and aspirations. These trees only grow straight up. Most of us would want to reach the sky--our hopes and dreams. I can't say that I have become a full grown bamboo tree but I can say that I am getting there. I need a little more tending to reach the highest possible peak that I can reach.

GMA-7 is now renting this for their soap opera. My mom did the interiors of this house but this set was done by the channel's set designer.

This picture was taken a year ago in Manila. I was with my classmates from the Alcove. This was part of our assignment. We were asked to shoot around the area of Manila near the bay. This child was curious about the equipment that most of us had while walking around and didn't really hesitate to pose for the camera. You can see the innocence in her eyes in this picture.

It was a Saturday afternoon and I was still on my feet working while the rest of the working class were already out in shopping malls and doing something more interesting. My meeting scheduled last Thursday was rescheduled to Saturday because the project architect was still out of town from the holiday. We came there to check the project and gave the salary to our weekly workforce. After that, I got my camera and took some shots of greeneries around me. They weren't extraordinary pictures but I love them.

Shooting with my Phone Camera

I was at Timberland today for a coordination meeting. I got there at 3pm and started assessing our progress. After doing my routine check of the place, I had nothing else to do but wait for the project architect and the owner of the house we are constructing who came at 5pm. I wish I brought my DSLR camera with me. I saw this cabana on the other mountain from where I was standing. The only camera I had was the camera on my prehistoric nokia phone. I took a shot of the cabana. I wasn't really happy with the picture because it was blurred and overexposed but I really loved the composition of the picture. I tweaked it in photoshop and came out with this watercolor image. I promise to bring my camera the next time I go there.

Street Photography

I haven't been taking pictures outside and I miss it. I miss walking a couple of miles to look for that one perfect shot. I miss sweating under the sun while keeping my eyes open for beautiful things around me. This picture was taken in Intramuros. This was for a homework I submitted in one the art classes I attended to years ago. Before capturing this image, I have already sweated profusely and have walked around the walled city for an hour just to find these interesting subjects.

When you're young and you have so much time to waste, you get to think of different things to waste your time on. I shot this picture 3 years ago. I bought some colored paper from the bookstore without having any idea on what to do with them. I started making a set of colored paper planes. Still clueless on what to do, I played with them and started laying them on a circle. I found the pattern interesting and shot this picture. I had this picture printed and framed and its hanging on a wall somewhere...

Another one from my old files. I remember taking this picture on a lazy sunday afternoon. I was so bored and restless that day that I went around the house to look for things to photograph. I came across this pair of japanese slippers from my sister's rock garden. I really loved how the light from the window falls on the slippers. I took a few shots of it and tweaked it in photoshop giving it this black and white look. Again, lost the original file... huhuhu

I took this picture 2 years ago. I set up my stuff inside my dad's office. It became my make-shift studio for the day. I arranged the delicate chess set on his desk and borrowed a hot light (extremely hot halogen light) from the warehouse and lit the red wall which served as my background. I set my camera (my old one) on a tripod and shot away. This is my favorite from the bunch of pictures I took that day. I don't have the original file anymore but I found this file on a website where I posted it years ago. I wish I was as OC as I am today about my files. I could've saved all my first few pictures. Too late for that I guess. And by the way, this picture wasn't digitally manipulated. :-)

Watson's Health and Beauty

I was commissioned again by CB1 Builders Corporation to shoot different projects they have accomplished in the past year for their company brochure. I was able to shoot the interiors of different Watson's Stores around Metro Manila. It was hard to take pictures inside the store while customers are walking around and while the staff are fixing inventories on the shelves. But I came up with great pictures nonetheless. :)

Yana in Black and White

I have always admired Ansel Adams for his black and white photographs of landscapes and other things. I never tried doing my own photographs in b&w and this is my first shot at it. This picture was taken in full color (digital) and was tweaked in photoshop. I love the drama that this picture exudes. It reminds me of classic hollywood pictures.

The storm had just passed. The strong winds had stopped pounding our windows and roof. We were left home, bored, with no electricity! It was almost 5pm and most of Luzon is still in total blackout. With nothing better to do, mom went out of the patio and brought us some peanuts to munch on while waiting for the electricity to be restored. It really didn't do anything to our boredom! I instead went inside my room, got my camera and speedlite and took a bazillion pictures of peanuts atop the table. It amused me for the rest of the night!

It's really difficult to come up with great interior shots without a wide angle lens especially in very tight spaces. I used my kit lens (at the widest angle) to take this shot. I was outside the bathroom, set the camera on a tripod and clicked away. This is the best shot from the batch of pictures.

The Missed Opportunity

I finally had my pictures printed out today just in time for Friday's go see. I was at DPI Photocenter at around 3pm. On my way up the stairs, I saw this blonde guy smoking by the door. I thought to myself, " I know this guy!". I went inside the gallery (forgetting about the guy) and I handed my cd to the receptionist. She scanned through the files and asked me what the size of the pictures will be. Then I heard this other guy inside the gallery asking the receptionist, " Is marc nicdao here?" . Then it dawned on me that the blonde guy outside is Marc Nicdao, one of today's best photographers!!! I wanted to chat with him for a bit but he went inside one of the studios to prepare for his photoshoot for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. I could've at least introduced myself ! Argh! Anyway, I got my pictures after about an hour! Geez! And oh, I forgot to have something printed again. I'm including this picture as the front page for my portfolio. These are sort of thumbnails of all the pictures inside my plastic (eeekkk) folio. I am so nervous and excited for Friday's go see! Wish me luck!

Then I saw my computer staring at me, turned it on, and started editing more pictures. I love this picture because you can clearly see the subject against the black background. The first time I met Leslie was on the day of the photoshoot. We exchanged messages before the shoot but I didn't really know how she is in person . I was pleasantly surprised when this bubbly girl stepped out of her car! My gawd! She's tall! And she's not shy to pose for the camera either. She must have been watching America's Next Top Model because her moves are so "Trya-ish". I'm sure I'll be seeing her in my future shoots!

This is one of the series of pictures I took of Matt Rutsch during our photo session for my portfolio last Friday. It was his first time to pose for the camera. He was a really shy guy. It was maybe because there were more than ten people inside the room when I was taking his pictures. The fact that he had to take his shirt off after the this series for another concept really didn't help as well. I was happy with how his pictures turned out.

My brother and I were toying with my DSLR and my speedlite while waiting for our dad to finish his "social responsibility" with his colleagues. The sun had just set and we could still see a hint of light from the horizon. We thought that we could pull off a "rave party" theme for this picture. Well, we tried.

When you have an DSLR, everyone thinks you're a PRO. My dad dragged me to the ground breaking of Timberland in San Mateo, Rizal. We happen to be the first contractor to put up a residential unit for our client in this very posh community. And of course, I wasn't there to mingle with clients or oversee the construction of the house. I was there to take pictures! This picture will be used for Sta. Lucia Development Corporation's press release in one of the county's dailies.

I was going though some files in my computer and I found some old pictures of the Photoshoot we had with Dominique James at PCCI a few months back. This experiece really made me love photography all the more. This wasn't something I envisioned myself to be doing when I was growing up. We were encouraged to be doctors, lawyers, managers, nurses or architects. It never really crossed my mind to be a photographer. The encouragement I got from my friends and family also fueled my desire to be good in this field. I'm still learning and thanks to my brother, Patrick, I don't really have to read up on the more technical things because he shares these information with me.

My bestfriend, Mark Lee and I went to OneWorkshop in Makati last Thursday to check out the place and do some test shots for my fashion shoot on Friday. We tried different light set ups and different background colors. It was sort of an experiment for both of us. He asked me about some technical things about photography. I enthusiastically shared the things I know about this craft. Mark now knows what a honeycomb is and what a snoot is used for. And after the shoot, Mark got ecstatic about how his pictures turned out. So Mark Lee, this is your best shot!

It gives the home owner a sense of serenity in her own home. It also gives guests a feeling of being in a spa once they step inside this modern Asian home in the sub urbs of the Metro.
